The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, taking devotees through the majestic Himalayas to four holy shrines—Yamunotri Temple, Gangotri Temple, Kedarnath Temple, and Badrinath Temple. Nestled in the serene state of Uttarakhand, this journey is not just about visiting temples—it's a life-changing spiritual experience.
The Beginning of the Journey
The Char Dham Yatra usually begins from Haridwar or Rishikesh, both considered holy gateways to the Himalayas. Pilgrims gather here to take blessings from the sacred Ganga River before starting their journey.
Yamunotri: The Source of River Yamuna
The first stop is Yamunotri, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple is located in a remote valley surrounded by snow-covered peaks. The trek to Yamunotri begins from Janki Chatti and offers breathtaking views of nature.
Pilgrims also visit the hot springs at Surya Kund, where rice and potatoes are cooked as prasad.
Gangotri: The Origin of the Holy Ganga
Next comes Gangotri, the origin of the sacred Ganges River. The temple here is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The serene surroundings, flowing river, and peaceful atmosphere create a divine experience.
Many pilgrims take a dip in the icy waters of the Ganga, believing it purifies the soul.
Kedarnath: The Abode of Lord Shiva
The journey then moves to Kedarnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Located at an altitude of over 3,500 meters, this temple is surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains.
The trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund is challenging yet rewarding. Devotees often describe this part of the journey as the most emotional and spiritual.
Badrinath: The Sacred Vishnu Temple
The final destination is Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Set against the backdrop of the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the temple is easily accessible compared to Kedarnath.
Nearby attractions include Tapt Kund (hot spring) and Mana Village, the last village before the Indo-Tibetan border.
Best Time to Visit
The Char Dham Yatra usually opens in April/May and continues until October/November, depending on weather conditions. The best time to visit is between May–June and September–October for pleasant weather.
