Victoria Museum Andhra Pradesh

The Victoria Jubilee Museum is an archeological museum that was established way back in the year 1887. Even after the passage of more than a hundred years this museum has managed to retain its popularity because of its varied and unique collection of arts and artifacts. It is located on the Bandar Road in Vijayawada.

Victoria Jubilee Museum It was constructed in ashlar masonry and is a classic example of the Indo European architectural style. The foundation stone fro the building was laid by Robert Sewell, the then District Collector, Krishna on June 27th 1887, to mark the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Victoria’s coronation. The building was constructed to house the industrial exhibition. Later it came under the control of the Zamindaras of Nuzivid, District Board, Krishna and Zilla Parishad of Krishna. In the year 1962 the Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh took over the building and established an Archaeological Museum.

The museum attracts many visitors especially those who are interested in history and archaeology as it houses a worthy assortment of art and artifacts such as sculpture, paintings, idols, pottery, jewelry, tools and weapons from different historic periods, cutlery and inscriptions on tablets and manuscripts. There are relics from Neolithic age collected from excavations in nearby areas. Carefully conserved artifacts that are found to be more than 2000 years old and which are important markers of Buddhist history are showcased here. The Archaeology Department and the Archaeological Survey of India are responsible for most of the treasure found here and also look after the museum.
